How to Win at Slots
In my opinion, I think it is in most people’s nature to want to excel in anything they attempt to do. In terms of gambling, be it by playing cards, placing a sports bet or even by settling down in front of your favorite slot machine, this want and/or need to excel is amplified further by the motivation to make money.
However, with most gambling games the desire to make money is also backed by various strategies and skills that enable a player to have more of an edge against the house, thus offering a higher reward in comparison to the risk that a player may take to play. And while this definitely holds true in games such as poker or blackjack, it doesn’t hold true while playing any form of slots simply because there is no strategy that a player can use to beat the game of slots.
But even though there isn’t a strategy to beat the random number generators (RNG) in a slot machine, there are still ways a player can attempt to win while playing one of their favorite themed machines.
And here are a few of those ways.
Winning at Slot Machines
When a player is looking to win at slots, he or she should not be looking for ways to beat the game or trying to find an edge against the house or that particular machine, but they should be focusing on how to maximize their wagers in attempt to prolong their time playing their favorite slot machine ultimately giving them more chances to hit those desirable jackpots; which of course is in addition to the extremely fun time they should be having in the process.
Slots Bankroll Management
Ultimately, managing your slots bankroll is going to be key component when trying to win at slots. This is true for a couple reasons:
- Without a bankroll a player cannot play, thus eliminating all chances to win any money at all, much less a massive jackpot.
- The better the money management, the higher the stakes a player should be able to play each session because he or she should knows when to quit and/or when to start wagering less money. And when a player is able to wager the maximum amount of coins for their given budget, they are then setting themselves up to hit the highest potential jackpot possible.
Now, proper bankroll management starts with a plan. This plan will consist of a player’s overall bankroll, how much they want to spend on any one kind of machine including how much they will wager and a time or dollar amount when a player will decide to quit.
While there are no hard and fast rules to slot bankroll management, here are a few ideas to get you started.
- Only use 10% or 15% of your bankroll on any given machine. This does a few things for you; one, you allow yourself to enjoy more than one slot machine with your given bankroll and two, it makes ‘quit’ if you have used your allotted dollar amount up. Lastly, it keeps you from losing too much to a machine in case it has yet to pay much of anything, if anything at all, out to you. And if it were me, I’d go as far as applying the 10% to 15% rule to what I would wager on that machine as well. So for example, if I had a $100 bankroll I would only take 10% of it to a particular machine, or $10, and would only wager 10% of it per spin which would equal approximately $.10.
- Set up a win-loss and/or time guideline for quitting. While being a ‘quitter’ is generally considered a bad thing in society, being a ‘quitter’ in gambling is one of the best qualities a player can have. To become a quitter, set up a dollar amount that you must win and/or lose that when reached, you must quit. Also, it is a good idea to set up a time limit in case you are running on a breakeven stretch.
By setting up these types of guidelines, players are keeping themselves from losing too much or potentially losing the winnings that they have managed to accumulate. And any money saved actually translates into money that has been won.
So, while there is no strategy a player can employ to gain an edge on any form of slot machines, players can still practice solid bankroll management to ensure that they only spend what they can afford as well as stretch their money as far as it will go so that they prolong their entertainment and give themselves plenty of chances to win.
Other Slot Winning Techniques
Although money management is by far the most important strategy a player can employ to maximize their overall slot playing experience, there are a few other things a player can look for and/or do to add to it.
- Payout Percentage: Not all machines are created equal therefore, not all machines will pay back the same amount of money on average. For example, one machine may pay out 95% while another machine may pay out 99%; that 4% is enough to make a difference over the long run, especially if you are a player who wagers a significant amount of money each spin. So while the payout percentage should not make or break your decision to play on any given machine, it is still something to take into consideration.
- Progressive Machines: Since progressive slot machines take a portion of the wager made and contributes it towards the jackpot, players should always be betting the maximum amount required to win said jackpot. There is no reason to contribute to a jackpot that you are not giving yourself a chance to win. If you cannot play the maximum on a progressive machine, then don’t play on one at all.
- VIP/Comp Program: Most casinos will go out of their way to take care of their players, especially slots players. Always look to take advantage of a VIP or Comp program as this will more than likely offset any loses that might occur while playing. Many times the incentives that are offered are some kind of cash back or deposit bonus. In the scenario that the casino that you play at does not seem to openly offer a VIP or Comp program, than be sure to ask a manager what they can do to reward you. Many times a casino rewards players on a case-by-case basis and will be more than happy to reward you for playing consistently at their casino.
Winning Slot Strategy
Even though there isn’t any strategies that a player can use to be a consistent winner while playing their favorite slot machine, that doesn’t mean that they cannot actually become a ‘winning’ player or even in some cases turn a profit.
If a player practices proper bankroll management, plays and wagers on machines that offer the best payouts and bonuses and takes advantage of any incentives that the casino may offer, it is quite possible to become a winning slots player even without winning a massive jackpot.
